If once you have slept on an island…

If once you have slept on an island, You’ll never be quite the same …. know that poem? It’s come true.

I made my first visit to Star Island in the Isles of Shoals last summer and recently agreed to chair Natural History Week 2027, in its 46th year.

The 2026 conference hosted Melissa Paly as our keynote speaker. Lynn Vaccaro, Dr. Jennifer S. and Chloe Fross taught participants how to become able advocates for environmental issues global to local. We collected waste from the islands shores with Beyond Plastics, and planted native shrubs in an area disturbed by ACOE during a seawall rebuild.

The 2027 theme is emerging. It will include hands-on activities, current research & restoration methods that nurture hope for our thriving future. While building an inspired community – through a sunrise ocean dip, candle lit chapel service, labyrinth walk or meal with an unparalleled view of the sea.

The theme for Natural History Week 2027 will be announced in October and registration opens in January. The next conference is June 20-27, 2027. For once you’ve been to Star Island, you’ll never be quite the same….
